New uranium reserves found in Iran

New signs of uranium reserves in Iran have been found, the head of the Organization of Atomic Energy of Iran Ali Akbar Salekhi said, Trend reports, citing Iranian news agency MEHR.

One third of the country's territory was explored for uranium. The government issued finances to the national atomic energy organization for the search. Iran will cover its demand for uranium for 8 years.

Iran has 1400 kg of uranium extracted from Bender-Abbas, Sagande and Ardakane. The country has two primary sources of uranium. Experts believe that uranium reserves in Sagand and Bender-Abbas are only enough to fuel a small nuclear plant for 10 years. Uranium in Sagand is located 350 m deep and is extraction of it is complicated. Uranium extracted in Iran is many times more expensive than uranium sold on the world markets.
