The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has stated on its website that a contract was signed with Transneft to pump oil through the Baku-Novorossiysk Pipeline. Both companies have confirmed the signing of the contract, although none of them gave details about the terms.
Rasim Musabekov, an Azerbaijani MP and political analyst, noted that the contract was signed by the state-owned business enterprises and was economically beneficial. The pipeline section running from Baku to the Azerbaijani border belonged to SOCAR and it would be better to make use of it, Musabekov reiterated. He believes that it is a new step towards the development of Russian-Azerbaijani relations.
Andrey Petrov, Head of the section for analysis of post-Soviet space of the MSU IAC and an expert of Vestnik Kavkaza, predicts that the renewal of the contract will be a significant event in Russian-Azerbaijani relations. The pipeline had almost become the symbol of solidity of their ties after withdrawal of Russian troops from the Qabala Radar, he added.
