Russian gas transit through Ukraine dropped by 9% to 12.2 billion cubic meters in January-February 2014, compared with January-February 2013, Newsru.com reports.
Gas transit through Ukraine increased by 3.2% to 86.1 billion cubic meters in 2013, compared with 2012. Ukrainians consumed 5.6 billion cubic meters of gas in February 2014, 2% less than in February 2013.
Gazprom has recently cancelled its beneficial gas prices for Kiev and threatened to stop exporting gas to Ukraine unless it pays its gas debts (totalling $1.529 billion as of March 7). European countries have started increasing their gas purchases, fearing that gas transit through Ukraine may stop.
