The main reasons for the curtailing of the South Stream project were European bureaucrats and their "tricks" as well as a decrease in gas demand in Europe, the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said at a closed meeting of Russian-European business circles.
He noted that he understands Gazprom's decision to curtail the pipeline project.
According to Schroeder, a decrease in demand for gas in Europe and the rising costs of the project were also some of the reasons for curtailing it. However the major issue was the refusal of Brussels to admit that South Stream was an opportunity to improve the supply of gas to Europe, Schroeder believes.
