Turkish Minister for Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications Lutfi Elvan said today that the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will have been launched by the end of 2015, connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, Trend reports.
The railway is being constructed according to a trilateral agreement. A new 105-km railway line is under construction. Georgia will reconstruct the Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi raiway to increase freighting capacity to 15 million tons a year. A switch from the Georgian railway gauge to the European one will be constructed in Akhalkalaki. The railway corridor will have a maximum capacity of 17 million tons a year, starting with 6.5 million tons at its launch.
