An agreement on supporting the Nabucco gas pipeline project is planned to be signed in October, Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday, Trend reports, citing the Anadolu newspaper.
At the opening of the Second Black Sea Energy and Economic Forum in Istanbul, Erdogan reminded participants that the inter-government agreement on Nabucco was signed in July 2009. The pipeline will have a capacity of 31 billion cubic m of gas annually and is supported by the European Commission, Erdogan said.
The Nabucco project involves gas transport from the Caspian region to European countries bypassing Russia and going through Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Austria. It will fulfill 5% of EU demands for gas in 2020. The consortium consists of
Germany's RWE, the Austrian OMV, the Romanian Transgaz, the Bulgarian
Bulgargaz and the Hungarian MOL. The project is worth 7.9 billion
euro.
Two weeks ago the head of the Nabucco Pipeline International GmbH project, Reinhard Michek, said at the international conference in Baku that the first gas supplies using Nabucco will be available in 2015.
