The Somali pirates have left the hijacked Turkish cargo ship Yasin C, having found no one on board. All 25 crew members hid themselves in one of the compartments of the ship, having stocked up on food, reports Associated Press citing Turkish Media.
The ship was hijacked on Wednesday, 400 km. from the Kenyan port of Mambas. The crew members are Turkish citizens. The pirates found no one on board and left the ship causing a lot of material damage.
According to figures of the International Maritime Bureau, Somali pirates have carried out 217 attacks and hijacked 47 ships.
Somalia has not been able to deal with the problem of piracy since the state ceased to exist in 1991, after the fall of Said Barre's dictatorship. The international community recognizes the Federal Government of Samolia as the official ruling power, but it controls only part of the country with the capital in Mogadishu. The other parts of Somalia are under the rule of unrecognized states.
