The third airport, which is being built in Istanbul, will be one of the largest airports in the world, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.
“The fact that the airport is being built by domestic companies clearly demonstrates the level of development of Turkey’s construction sector,” the Sabah newspaper cited him as saying.
Davutoglu added that Istanbul's new airport will be able to receive aircraft of more than 150 of the world’s airlines. The opening ceremony is scheduled for October 29, 2017.
The agreement on construction of a third airport in the city was signed in May 2013. The Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon consortium of companies won the tender for the airport’s construction by offering 22.1 billion euros for participation in the project.
Currently, 30,000 people are working on the construction of the third airport near Lake Terkos to the north of Istanbul. Initially, the airport will serve 90 million passengers per year, and this figure will increase to 150 million in the future, Trend reports.
