Turkish Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said today that Turkey would sell its share in the TANAP project if it gets a good offer. He added that some countries were interested in the deal. Oil analyst Seymour Aliyev told Vestnik Kavkaza that Azerbaijan – as the owner of 58% of the shares – would hardly be interested in extending its share, so as not to be compelled to increase the financing of the project, which is currently evaluated at around $10-11 billion. The analyst assures that Turkey is not planning to quit the project. Turkmenistan or Iran may be interested in it to transport gas.
Aliyev emphasized that Turkey would make money from gas transit regardless. He reminded that Turkey’s TPAO had a share in Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz Field (the main gas source for the pipeline), it will be connected to Europe using TAP.
Vladimir Yevseyev, the director of the Center for Socio-Political Studies, opined that Tehran was uninterested in the offer, because it was actively engaged in the Iraqi gas market. One pipeline will be launched this month, another one is under construction. Both are more significant for Iran, the expert considers. A gas pipeline to Turkey needs gas because no gas price has been decided yet. There are problems with the construction of a gas pipeline to Oman. In any case, they are more favourable for Iran.
