Armen Movsisyan, the Armenian Energy Minister, and his Iranian counterpart, Majid Namju, have signed a number of bilateral agreements and memoranda in Yerevan, including an agreement on the construction of the Meghriyskaya hydroelctric station on the border river Aras, the news agency ARKA reports.
Iran and Armenia plan to build the two most powerful hydroelectric stations in the South Caucasus on the Aras River: on the Armenian side the station will be located in Meghri, and on the Iranian - in Karachilar. Each of the stations will annually produce 793 million kWh of electricity. The Meghri station's estimated power will be 130 MW.
On Friday the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding between the two countries’ Ministries of Energy concerning environmental compliance in the border area and the Aras River, as well as an agreement on cooperation in the construction of a third high-voltage line between Iran and Armenia.
