Iran has launched a large-scale exploration for fuel uranium in the southern and central regions of the country, chairman of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi announced, Trend reports, referring to the Iranian news agency MEHR.
Iran possesses 1400 kg of uranium deposits in Bandar-e-Abbas, Saghand and Ardakan. These uranium reserves are capable of providing fuel for a station with a capacity of 1000 MW over a period of 10 years. In 1970 Iran acquired 600 tons of “yellow cake” (refined uranium stone) from South Africa. Iran has already used the largest part of this, and the country’s uranium reserves are almost finished, according to information released by the organization “Institute for Science and International Security” in 2009.
