Putin signs law on undesirable NGOs

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed an act on undesirable foreign and international organizations in Russian.

According to the law, the undesirable activities of foreign or international non-governmental organizations are activities that represent a threat to the foundations of the constitutional order of Russia's defense and national safety.

The Prosecutor General and his deputy law have the right to prohibit undesirable organizations and implement special programs and projects in the Russian Federation. This must be done in coordination with the Foreign Ministry. According to Interfax, an organization can also be excluded from the list of undesirable organizations.

The law also obliges credit and non-credit financial institutions to deny cash transactions and other assets if the organization is included on the unwanted list in Russia.

Credit and non-credit institutions must inform the Federal Financial Monitoring Service about instances of refusals of operations. The Federal Financial Monitoring Service, in its turn, provides this information to the Prosecutor General and the Ministry of Justice.

According to the law, the fine for citizens amount to 5 to 15 thousand rubles, for officials it amounts to 20 to 50 thousand rubles, for legal entities from 50 to 100 thousand rubles.
