The main goal of the Georgian government is the against poverty, Prime
Minister Nika Gilauri said at a the international conference on
improvement of business climate in Europe and Central Asia, organized
by the World Bank and the Georgian government, held in Tbilisi on
November 29. The premier urged the authorities to be more active in
inviting investments to open new work places, reduce unemployment and
cope with poverty, Business Georgia reports.
Two weeks ago, President Mikheil Saakashvili said that 20% of the
population live in poverty. In 2003, approximately 50% were living in
poverty. The social-economic reforms helped reduce the poverty level
2.5 times.
The government expects from $900 million to $1 billion of investments
in 2011. Gilauri said that final results depend on the results of the
third quarter and will be published by the National Statistics Service
this week.
According to the service, direct foreign investments reached $196 million.
