Armenian president discusses relations with Turkey in Athens

Greek and Armenian Presidents Karolos Papoulias and Serzh Sargsyan
have discussed bilateral cooperation and international problems in
Athens, including relations with Turkey, RIA Novosti reports.
Sargsyan arrived in Athens on Tuesday.

The Greek president said that both the Armenian and Greek peoples have
a common history and were persecuted by the Ottoman Empire.

Greece and Turkey have improved relations but have not resolved the
Cyprus problem, delimitation in the Aegean Sea and the status of the
Patriarch of Constantinople in Istanbul.

Armenian and Turkish relations were ruined by several historic
problems, including the Turkish position on the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict and its refusal to admit the genocide of Armenians by the
Ottoman Empire in 1915.The border between Armenia and Turkey remains
closed. The two countries have no diplomatic relations.
