The Russian government has approved the deal on lifting the visa
regime with Abkhazia, the website of the Russian Cabinet reported on
Friday.
Consideration of the deal was decided on January 17. It will be viewed
by the State Duma.
Russia and Abkhazia agreed to lift the visa regime in Sukhumi on
October 2, 2009, signed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two
countries, Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Shamba. The agreement was due to
come into force 30 days after the signing. However, ratification was
postponed due to adjustments needed in the deal.
The bill includes visa-free travel for up to 90 days using
international and internal passports. The document is aimed at
allowing citizens to travel easier, strengthening the legal foundation
of Russian-Abkhaz and Russian-South Ossetian ties and improvement of
humanitarian exchange.
