Mubarak promises not to stand in presidential elections

The president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, has stated that he will stay in office to the end of his authorised term in September and will not stand in the next presidential elections. He promised to work hard till the elections in September and provide a peaceful succession of power.

However, the leader of the opposition, former head of the IAEA Mohamed el-Baradei, said that the promises of Mubarak are only ruses by which he hopes to stay in office.

In Cairo about 80,000 people participated in the demonstration against Mubarak.

Earlier, US president Barack Obama had a telephone talk with Mubarak. Obama emphasized the importance of the army in the transitional period. He called on the military authorities of Egypt to do their best to secure peace in the country.

Mubarak agreed with Obama that the status quo couldn't continue and changes are needed. Obama didn't comment on the question put by journalists as to whether Mubarak should leave his post.

Iran continues to support the Egyptian opposition. Turkish prime minister Erdogan called on Mubarak to resign from the post of president.

The riots in Egypt have been taking place for a week. More than 150 people have been killed.
