European leaders urge Mubarak to resign

The leaders of France, Germany, the UK, Italy and Spain urged Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak to resign, Reuters says, citing a statement by
French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,
Catherine Ashton, urged Egyptian authorities to start democratic
reforms and hold free and unprejudiced elections earlier. She said
that all people responsible for violence in the country need to be
punished. The EU official said that threatening of journalists is
unacceptable.

Russia called Egypt a strategic partner and the key country in the
Middle East settlement. Russia is interested in stable and prosperous
Egypt and immediate settlement of social-economic and political
problems.

Thousands of Mubarak's supporters entered Tahrir Square, where
thousands of opposition members were, on Wednesday. There were attacks
with sticks and stones. Molotov cocktails were thrown at night.

Various media sources give different numbers of injuries, ranging from
900 to 1,500 injured, from 5 to 15 killed.
