Iran toughens measures against drug-trafficking

Iran spends large sums of money on toughening the fight against
drug-trafficking, these funds could have been spent on municipal
improvements and the development of the country, General Guseyn
Zulfugari, border police chief of Iran, said, Trend reports.


The general said that major finances are needed on the border of Iran,
Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said that the international society does
not support Iran in fighting drug-trafficking. The police in the
majority of country fail to reveal even 10% of drug shipments, while
Iran confiscates 35% of imported drugs.


Zulfugari added that the quantities of narcotics confiscated rise
annually. Over 400 tons of narcotics were confiscated in
March-December 2010, many smugglers were disarmed and arrested. Over
4,000 Iranian police officers died in clashes with drug smugglers,
over 12,000 were wounded.

The border service chiefs of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan,
Iran and Russia had a meeting in Baku on Wednesday. They discussed the
state of affairs in the Caspian and underlined the importance of
developing a cooperation mechanism to provide security in the region.
