One person died and three were injured in clashes between
anti-government protesters and the police in Aden in southern Yemen,
France Press cites local medical sources.
Hundreds of young people demanding the resignation of President Ali
Abdullah Saleh, who has been in power for over 32 years, gathered at
the local air terminal. The police tried to drive the mob out with
gunfire. One protester was injured and died in hospital, RIA Novosti
reports.
The protesters attempted to attack a municipal building in the city
and set several cars on fire. Guns were used against the protesters.
They started throwing stones at the police and blocked several streets
with tires.
Yemen saw protests involving thousands of people last week. The
protests were stopped by the police. Over 20,000 people were involved
in protests on Thursday. Students and legal professionals started
protests in Sana on Monday.
The unrest in Yemen is related to the anti-government disorders that
started in Tunisia, Egypt, Algiers and Bahrain. The president of
Tunisia, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, had to move to Saudi Arabia and lost
power after a week. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who was in power
for almost 30 years, resigned on Friday, handing power over to the
military. Demands for reforms have been heard in Algiers and Bahrain,
where one protester died.
