Three protesters and a police officer died at an anti-government
protest in the capital of Bahrain, Manama, dpa reports.
Police used batons and tear gas against the protesters at the main
square on Thursday. An opposition spokesman Ibragim Mattar said that
one person died, and many are in a grave condition.
Thousands of protesters had spent several days in a tent camp at the
Pearl Square in Manama, demanding the authorities hold reforms, RIA
Novosti reports.
Hundreds of police officers and members of security services cleared
the square. The broke the camp site and drove out the protesters,
pursuing them on the streets.
The first protests in Bahrain happened at the Shiite village of
Karkazan, south of Manama, on Sunday. Three police officers were
injured. The next protests were seen at Nuwaidrat village on Sitra
Island. Tear gas was used, one protester died at a hospital in Manama.
The protests were inspired by anti-government demonstrations in
Tunisia and Egypt.
