Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has talked about police redundancies
at a council of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee on Tuesday.
The law on police will come into force on March 1, 2011. The document
will rename the Russian law-enforcement service from “militia” to
“police”. 20% of the staff will have been dismissed by January 1,
2012.
Medvedev said that the number of police officers in the Caucasus will
be increased and that work on improving protection for judges needs
improvement. Such an order was made in April 2010 at a council on
terrorism in Dagestan.
Medvedev emphasized that he had decided to hold the Counter-Terrorism
Committee session in Vladikavkaz, because that is where civilians face
terrorism daily. The president noted that there were no major
improvements in the situation. He demanded that the special services
keep taking preventive measures.
Medevedev visited the North Caucasus within a few days of the
terrorist attacks in Kabardino-Balkaria, in which tourists were
attacked and a cablecar line blown up. A vehicle primed with bombs was
found near the Prielbrusye Hotel.
He added that 332 bandits, including 40 leaders, and over 600 members
of illegal armed formations, had been detained and tried in court last
year.
