UN Human Rights Council to investigate crimes in Libya

The Human Rights Council (HRC) has decided to establish an international commission to investigate crimes committed during the current riots in Libya at a special session of the UN in Geneva, RIA Novosti reports.

Protests in Libyan provinces demanding the resignation of Muammar Gaddafi started on February 15. According to media reports and human rights organizations, up to 2000 people have been killed during the riots. Foreign countries are holding mass evacuations of their nationals from Libya.

The UN Security Council will meet in New York at 15.00 (23.00 MSK) to discuss the situation in Libya. On the agenda submitted by France and Britain is a draft resolution calling for the imposition of a series of sanctions against the Libyan leadership. According to the French Foreign Minister, Michel Alliot-Marie, the project calls for a total ban on the sale of weapons to Libya, as well as the  initiation of cases of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court.
