Russian Interior Ministry toughens measures against extremism

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs will improve operative and preventive measures against extremism and will update security measures at social facilities, Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said, Izvestia reports.


Dmitry Medvedev determined a set of priority goals for the police, including terrorism, extremism, organized crime and corruption, after signing the law 'On Police'.


He mentioned the operation in Bashkortostan, in which a police officer was attacked in November 2010. The police uncovered and disarmed an extremist organization planning terrorist attacks.
The minister said that they are carrying out expert work on protecting infrastructure facilities against extremism. The work is backed by other law-enforcing structures.

Nurgaliyev said that they achieved success in fighting organized crime in 2010. Saratov Region is the best example.


He said that they are planning to make more use of navigation and monitoring systems. The system is operating efficiently in 79 cities. 77 regions are using GLONASS-based equipment. 683 control centers and 16,000 vehicles are equipped with satellite navigation and monitoring systems. Further modernization is planned.
