US State Department concerned over visa-free regime between Georgia, Iran

The US State Department has published a report on fighting drug trafficking. Georgia was mentioned in the report.

The Georgian government called the problem a priority. The national drug control strategy and an integrated action plan will be an efficient step, the report says.

The report also mentions the simplified visa regime between Georgia and Iran. Drug trafficking to Georgia may increase, unless there is proper inspection. 40% of Afghan opium is transported through Iran and may benefit from the visa-free regime with Georgia.

US experts say that Georgia needs a reformed drug control service. Georgia’s geographic position makes it the main drug corridor between Asia and Europe. The drugs from Greece and Turkey reach Western Europe via Georgia. The report says that Georgia does not control Abkhazia and the Tskhinvalia region and there may be a drug route through them.

The report says that Georgia has interior problems with drugs. Heroin,, methadone and marijuana are sold in the interior market. Georgia announced drug control as a priority in 2010.
