Thousands of protesters of the Armenian opposition, headed by former president Levon Ter-Petrosian, have gathered on the square in front of the Matenadaran Institute of Ancient Manuscripts.
According to Ter-Petrosian's evaluations, there are about 100 thousand people, but according to the law enforcement bodis, the rally attracted about 30,000 people, RIA Novosti reports.
The opposition coalition Armenian National Congress (ANC), headed by Levon Ter-Petrosyan, claims that the Armenian authorities have failed to comply with any requirements put forward at the previous opposition rally on March 1. Among the demands of the opposition are the release of prisoners and the resignation of Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan. The opposition believes him to be the main culprit in the economic and social crisis.
The opposition also said that the current president of Armenia can improve the situation, if he cleans the government of “corrupt senior officials." Speaking at the rally, Levon Ter-Petrosyan said that the continued neglect of the authorities to the demands of the people will lead to a revolution in the country.
The scenario of such a revolution, in his view, would not follow the bloody events in the Middle East, but should rather be a Velvet Revolution
