UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the confrontation between the Libyan authorities and rebels, his official spokesman Martin Nesirki told a briefing on Wednesday, RIA Novosti reports.
The forces of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi are attacking Zintan and Mistrate, resulting in over 40 people dead.
The secretary general called for an immediate cease-fire, according to resolutions 1970 and 1973 of the UN Security Council.
Ban Ki-moon is returning to New York from his visit to Egypt and Tunisia. He plans to report about the situation to the UN Security Council on Thursday.
The operation against Libyan forces started on March 19, according to UN Security Council resolution 1973. The UK, USA, France, Canada, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Denmark are involved. Libyan media say that over 60 people have already died in bombings carried out by the coalition. Western states deny the information.
