Leading EU experts publish reports on South Caucasus

The European Union should use its power to solve problems in South Caucasus states face, Trend reports.

The European Political Center (EPC) in Brussels and the LINKS center in London urge the EU to assist the South Caucasus. They publish a report on the issue on Tuesday. The report was made by the head of LINKS David Sammut and an analyst of the EPC Amanda Paul.

The report says that the South Caucasus has been in need for support of stability for 20 years. There is a threat of new clashes and tensions. The report was presented in Brussels on Wednesday, during debates.

The authors of the report recommend diplomatic efforts to host a conference on security and cooperation in the South Caucasus to reach a corresponding agreement in 2014. The process needs to be multilateral, similar to the OSCE process, and function within the organization.

Sammut said that Nagorno-Karabakh and the Georgian-Ossetian conflicts are still unresolved.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgian autonomies, proclaimed independence at the military conflict in August 2008. Russia has been supporting the regions ever since.

The authors of the report say that the EU needs to establish partner relations with Russia to resolve problems in the South Caucasus. It may become possible by constructive involvement of Russia in a dialogue on common European security, that started in 2009 within the framework of the Corfu Process.
