Russia and Abkhazia have a territorial dispute. Abkhazia demands a reconsideration of the border, Kommersant reports.
Moscow is holding a session of the Russian-Abkhaz commission for delimitation and demarcation of border on March 28 – April 1.
The dispute started around the Aibga village. It is part of the Russian territory, Abkhazia has a contrary view.
Vice-Speaker of Abkhazia Irina Agrba said that Abkhazia has been reducing in size for a long period in history. This issue will be a challenge for relations of the two countries.
Abkhazia says that Moscow claims 160 square kilometers, which is 20% of the Gagry District, Editor-in-Chief of the local paper Chegemskaya Pravda said. The Russian Foreign Ministry insists that the dispute is around a smaller territory.
Aibga village is located on River Psou. There are proposals to organize demarcation along the river, Abkhaz Prime Minister Sergey Shamba said.
Vzglyad paper says that Moscow is holding a working meeting, which excludes signing of documents. Abkhaz Ambassador to Russia Igor Akhba expressed confidence that the sides will resolve the situation.
