Georgia attacked South Ossetia in August 2008, beginning a five-day war with Russia, the head of the EU mission that investigated the conflict told the US Congress today, reports ITAR-TASS.
"From our point of view it was Georgia that began hostilities against South Ossetia. We have not received any explanations of Georgia's actions. Before the outbreak of the conflict, Russia's armed forced were inactive," Haidi Tatiavini said.
She has called Georgia's aggression an "isolated act and a climax of tension".
Meanwhile, she noted that all the sides were ultimately responsible for the conflict and Russia violated international law with its subsequent recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
