President of Yemen agrees to hand over power

President of Yemen Ali Abdullah Saleh has agreed to the proposal of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (CCASG) to resolve the political crisis in the country, including handing over power, Reuters reports, citing the head of CCASG, Abdul Rahman bin Hamad al-Attiyah.

Negotiations with the opposition of Yemen were to be held in Er-Riyad.

The CCASG consists of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

The Emir of Qatar proposed mediation in the road map on April 7.

Saleh refused to resign. Yemen withdrew its ambassador from Qatar.

Saleh announced an emergency situation for 30 days on March 18, due to mass protests all over the country, especially in Sana. Over 50 people died and some 300 were injured. Saleh said that the law enforcers were not responsible for the victims.

The Middle East and North Africa have been struck by protests, resulting in the resignation of the leaders of Egypt and Tunisia. Anti-government protests have been held in Algiers, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Bahrain and Syria. The protests in Libya turned into mass clashes between the law-enforcers and rebels.
