BRICS states pass joint declaration

Leaders of the BRICS states have passed a joint declaration at a summit in China. The document was signed at the Sheraton Hotel in Sanya after five hours of talks between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, ITAR-TASS reports.

BRICS states will continue supporting Japan. International cooperation in developing nuclear energy is needed and must follow standards and security demands in construction and the exploitation of nuclear power plants. Nuclear energy is an important element in the energy balance of BRICS, leaders of the organization said.

BRICS members have also expressed a common position on Libya and agreed to cooperate with other UN Security Council members to resolve the situation. The declaration expresses concern with the situation in the Middle East, North and West Africa.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that the common view is that resolution of the problem needs political and diplomatic methods, rather than force.

This is why BRICS praised mediation efforts of the African Union headed by the South African president, Medvedev noted.

Moreover, BRICS supports Russian membership in the WTO. BRICS leaders noted that they confirm devotion to successful, all-around and balanced conclusion of the multilateral talks on WTO in Doha. Brazil, India, China and South Africa have full support of Russia“s membership in the WTO, the declaration says.
