Georgia confirms commitment to modernize justice system

Georgia has convinced the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarberg, that measures to improve justice have already been taken, the CE official said in Tbilisi, Trend reports.

Hammarberg said that Georgia will soon be improving its Criminal Code. He noted that Georgia has few acquittals, only 1% of all cases.

The CE official said that his interest in the issue comes from complaints the CE received. He met executive and legislative authorities and held talks with the human rights committee, the chairman of the Supreme Court, judges, representatives of non-governmental organizations and public figures.

Hammarberg also visited Rustavi, where he met several convicts and their families. This provides enough information to prepare recommendations for improving the justice system. There were complaints about the actions of the prosecution with faked evidence.

He pointed out that he received a complaint stating that police crimes of 2007-2010 have not been investigated.
The CE Commissioner for Human Rights has been in Georgia for 4 days.
