USA to exchange information on tactical arms with Russia

The USA is planning to exchange information on tactical arms with Russia, US Deputy Secretary of State for agreements Rose Gottemoeller said at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, RIA Novosti reports.

As a first step towards reduction of nuclear arms the US plans to exchange information on the number, location and types of non-strategic arms in Europe. Gottemoeller reminded her listeners that they had concluded a deal with Russia, with the latter moving its tactical arms further away from the border with NATO. In exchange, the US had reduced the number of non-strategic arms in Europe.

She underlined that the US strived for cooperation with Russia in anti-missile defenses.

The Republican administration of George Bush Jr. planned to set up anti-missile complexes in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic. Moscow recognized these as a threat to its strategic potential.

President Barack Obama changed the anti-missile strategy and postponed realization of the plans.

Obama and Pentagon Chief Robert Gates adjusted the US anti-missile strategy on 17 September 2009.

The US did not abandon plans to set ground anti-missile defenses in Europe, postponing them until 2015.
Russia and NATO agreed to form territorial anti-missile defenses together at a summit in Lisbon in November 2010.
