The US administration is considering the introduction of "targeted sanctions" against the government of Syria in retaliation for the suppression of anti-government protests in this country, Reuters reports, referring to the White House spokesman Tommy Vitor.
The announcement came several hours after it became known about the deaths of at least 25 people in clashes with anti-government demonstrations in the city of Dera'a in southern Syria.
Unrest in Syria began in mid-March, after groups of students were arrested in the city of Dera'a for anti-government slogans. People took to the streets to demand their release. The unrest spread to other parts of the country, particularly in the cities of Homs and Hama. According to human rights defenders, than 350 people died in clashes with police.
