Iran demands the speeding up of settling security issues of the Caspian Sea and determination of national zones, Iranian special representative for Caspian issues Muhammed Mehti Akhundzade said today, Trend reports.
The official believes that dragging the issue out does not allow proper control over smugglers and illegal fishermen.
Akhundzade said that the sides had decided to provide a range of 25 miles for national zones and that there had been progress, which will continue at meetings in Russia and Kazakhstan.
Baku held the 8th session of the special working group of Caspian states on April 26-27.
Kazakhstan and Russia signed a deal on delimitating the Caspian Sea bed in July 1998 and a protocol to the document in May 2002.
Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan signed similar documents on November 29, 2001, and February 27, 2003, respectively.
Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the crossing point of their borders on May 14, 2003.
A framework convention on protection of the sea was signed in November 2003.
