Russian-NATO Council to discuss anti-missile cooperation

The Russian-NATO Council will hold a meeting of ambassadors today to discuss anti-missile cooperation, ITAR-TASS reports.

The Russian representative to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, said that a series of consultations have been held in Brussels in the last two days.

Anti-missile defenses were discussed by the heads of General Staffs on Wednesday. They confirmed interest in continuing the dialogue, although they noted differences in approaches to the issue.

Brussels held closed-door consultations between the Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Anatoly Antonov, and US Deputy Secretary of Defense James Miller. The US anti-missile defense chief Patrick O’Reilly was at the meeting on May 5.

The sides are discussing proposals made by US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on his visit to Moscow. Diplomats are talking about signing a joint declaration by the Russian and US presidents in Deauville in late May, where a G8 summit is to be held.

Russia, the USA and NATO partners expect practical results of negotiations to be formed at the meeting of defense ministers of Russia and 28 other states in June.

The Russian-NATO Council held a summit in Lisbon in November 2010. Russia and NATO agreed to cooperate in anti-missile defenses.
