Russia and China have agreed to support stabilization in the Middle East and North Africa, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov told a press-conference with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi, RIA Novosti reports.
Lavrov said that the position of the two states is based on non-intervention, as stated in the UN Charter.
Yang Jiechi underlined that China wants a settlement of the conflict in Libya using peaceful means. The main goal at this point is an immediate ceasefire in order to avoid complications and a more severe humanitarian problem.
The Middle East and Africa have been suffering from mass protests, resulting in the resignations of presidents in Egypt and Tunisia. Anti-government protests have been seen in Algiers, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria. The protests in Libya turned into mass clashes between the rebels and law-enforcers.
