Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil el-Araby has been elected as the new Secretary general of the League of Arab States, RIA Novosti reports.
He will replace Amr Moussa, who will run for president in Egypt.
Prime Minister of Qatar Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani said that the step is expression of respect for the role of Egypt, especially to the background of recent events.
The LAS has its headquarters in Egypt. It consists of 21 states and the Palestine Liberation Organization. Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan and Yemen founded the organization, signing the document in Cairo on March 22, 1945.
LAS holds summits and councils of foreign ministers annually.
The summit in Algiers in 2005 formed a common Arab parliament. The next summit was to be held in Baghdad in May. It was shifted due to the situation in the Arab states.
