An armed coup has been allegedly prevented in Georgia, the head of the
Information and Analytical Department of the Interior Ministry, Shota
Utiashvili, told a news briefing in Tbilisi, Armenia Today reports.
The Georgian Interior Minister denied reports that several people had
already been detained on charges of committing a coup.
Georgian media showed a video filmed in a restaurant. The footage
shows a conversation between the husband of the leader of the
opposition movement Nino Burjanadze, the former head of the Department
of Border Guard of Georgia Badri Bitsadze and a group of retired
military men, including retired general Gia Uchava.
According to the testimony of Mr. Uchava, who was detained for three
days, Badri Bitsadze had proposed an action plan, which was supposed
to unite up to 3500 former soldiers of armed paramilitary groups, who
were expected to undertake decisive actions and open fire on
law-enforcement units.
