The upper chamber of the Kazakh parliament has declined to ratify an
agreement with NATO on an operation in Afghanistan, News Kazakhstan
reports.
The committee for international relations, defense and security
decided to return the bill to parliament, co-reporter of the bill
Mukhtar Altynbayev said.
According to the Constitution, foreign military operations require the
approval of a joint session of the parliament chambers.
The lower chamber approved ratification on May 18.
Kazakhstan is to send troops to Afghanistan as part of the
international security force, with the approval and certification of
NATO for six months. Kazakh forces in Afghanistan would be under the
supervision of NATO Command and would follow NATO instructions.
The Taliban Movement passed a note to Kazakhstan saying that sending
support to NATO would have repercussions for Kazakhstan.
