Iran produces 50 kilograms of enriched uranium

Iran has produced more than 50 kilograms of enriched uranium, with a
concentration of 20 per cent, Xinhua reports, referring to the
representative of Iran at the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltani.

On the sidelines of the Second International Conference on Nuclear
Disarmament, Soltani expressed the view that Iran needs to accelerate
the production of enriched uranium up to 120 kilograms. This is
necessary for the “purpose of the research reactor in Tehran, in order
to make the radioactive isotopes necessary for medicine.”

In November 2009, Iran announced his plans to build ten plants for
uranium enrichment on its territory.

The US and Western countries accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons
under cover of a peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the
charges, saying that its nuclear program is aimed at meeting the
country's electricity needs.
