Azerbaijan adopts new Customs Code

The Azerbaijani Parliament has passed a new Customs Code in its third
reading today, Trend reports.

The chairman of the parliamentary committee for legal policy, Ali
Guseynov, said that the new Customs Code will use new technologies and
make its operation more clear to prevent corruption.

The head of the legal directorate of the State Customs Committee,
Senan Mukhtarov, said that there were no adjustments after the second
reading.

The new code allows consideration of complaints to take 15 days
instead of 30. However, the terms may be prolonged by 15 days if
additional materials are needed.

Violators of the code will need to present accounts of their
operations for 3 years, compared with 5 years in the old code.

Obligatory recoupment of customs payments was reduced from 5 to 3
years.

The old Customs Code was adopted in 1997. The new code will make the
customs service meet modern standards, increase income, speed up the
process of Azerbaijan’s joining the WTO, increase efficiency, improve
tariff policy and simplify trade-economic operations.
