The meeting between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his counterparts from Azerbaijan and Armenia, Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan, to discuss an agreement on the basic principles of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement has started in Kazan, RIA Novosti reports.
The Kazan summit will be the ninth tripartite summit since 2008 and the second this year. The previous summit was held on 5 March in Sochi.
The basic principles for resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, known as the Madrid principles, were presented to Armenia and Azerbaijan by the foreign ministers of France and Russia and the US Assistant Secretary of State in November 2007.
The Madrid principles include, among others, the return of territories around Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan , interim status for Nagorno-Karabakh, which provides guarantees of security, self-corridor linking Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh, the definition of the future final legal status of Nagorno-Karabakh through a legally binding will of its peoples, the right of all internal and displaced persons and refugees to return to their former homes, as well as international security guarantees, including a peacekeeping mission.
