The Georgian air forces will cease to exist as an independent element of the country’s armed forces and will be merged with the ground forces under an amendment to defence laws, Georgia Online reported on Wednesday.
The change is aimed at improving the structure, management and control of the armed forces and will also help the county to economize.
The amendment still has to be approved by parliament. If it goes through, the Georgian armed forces will consist of the ground forces and joint staff, as well legal elements of the Defense Ministry.
The first changes to Georgia’s military structure took place after the August 2008 war with Russia when the navy was transferred to the Defense Ministry from the Interior Ministry.
After the war that took place in August of 2008 the first change in the structure of Georgian Armed Forces was implemented when maritime forces were moved from the control of the Defense Ministry to the Interior Ministry and integrated into the border patrol coast guard.
