African Union discusses situation in Libya

Heads of governments and states of the African Union are at an
assembly in Equatorial Guinea. They are discussing security, armed
conflicts, progress in establishing democracy on the African
continent, economy, ITAR-TASS reports.


The main topic is the Libyan crisis. head of the AU commission Jean
Ping expressed concern with Libya, fearing that the state may turn
into a new Somalia. The African Union has a road map to end the
conflict in Libya.


Ping said that the union praises the demilitarized zone in Abyei
between the North and South Sudan. It is a good sign before official
announcement of independence of South Sudan on July 9.


Special Russian representative to Africa Mikhail Margelov is taking
part in the assembly. He underlined after a consultations with African
leaders on Wednesday that Russia wants to improve cooperation with the
African Union to settle the conflict in Libya.


Jean Ping expressed concern with the French military in Libya. Ping
says that the French are arming the rebels, RIA Novosti reports.


BBC says that the French are making air drops for rebels in the
mountains of south Tripoli. Special equipment is dropped at the Nafus
Mount. French Colonel Thierry Burkhard confirmed the air drops.
Jean Ping said that France may turn Libya into Somalia, a country that
split in 1991, after the fall of Mohamed Siad Barre.
