US to build radar in Turkey

The USA and Turkey will soon sign a deal on radar construction as part
of the European anti-missile defenses, Russia-24 reports.

Negotiations will end next week, a spokesman for Barack Obama's
administration said. He believes that the radar will be less effective
against the Iranian missile threat in Turkey than in Georgia or
Azerbaijan.

It is unclear yet whether data from the radar in Turkey will be shared
with Israel.

The administration of George Bush planned the build the radar in the
Czech Republic, together with anti-missile silos in Poland. Obama came
to power in January 2009 and reconsidered the plans.

The US plan to establish the European anti-missile system in 4 stages.
The first stage lasts until the end of 2011 and involves missile ships
in the Mediterranean Sea. The second stage last until 2015, a mobile
missile unit will be set in Romania. By 2018 similar units will be set
in Poland. Missiles will be modernized by 2020 to protect NATO members
from medium and low range missiles and ICBMs.

Anti-missile chief General-Lieutenant Patrick O-Riley said that the
radar in Eastern Europe will be set in late 2011. Georgia was viewed
as the best spot for the system.

Ankara demands the US to avoid giving Israel data from the radar,
ITAR-TASS reports.
