Human rights activist Karen Andreasyan presented new candidates for
the Central Electoral Commission – Artak Meliksetyan, Armen Smbatyan
and Tatevik Oganyan - to the president, News Armenia reports.
Two other candidates, Aid Muradyan and Roza Stepanyan, turned down
membership of the CEC. Some media wrote sarcastic reports about their
youth and lack of skill.
Two new candidates are older than 25 and have experience at the
Ombudsman’s Office.
The Armenian Parliament passed amendments to the Electoral Code on May
26. Seven members of the CEC are appointed by the president for 5
years. There are 15 candidates to choose from.
The candidates are presented by the ombudsman, the chairman of the
chamber of lawyers and the chairman of the Court of Cassation until
July 10.
The president needs to appoint candidates within 17 days from the law
coming into force.
The terms of office of the CEC end on July 14.
Armenia will hold parliamentary polls in 2012 and presidential polls in 2013.
