Sarkozy: Armenia and Azerbaijan should come to a compromise

Yerevan and Baku should come to a compromise to resume the “dynamics of peace” in Nagorno-Karabakh, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said.

The French leader was speaking during the talks with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan. The meeting took place on Wednesday evening at the Élysée Palace, ITAR-TASS reports.

"Each of the sides should make efforts to find a compromise for the resumption of the peaceful dynamics of the resolution of the conflict [in Nagorno-Karabakh]," Sarkozy said.

He also noted that "the initiative started a year and a half ago in this area has weakened.”

France, along with Russia and the United States, is a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, established in 1992 for the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

During the talks, the French and the Armenian presidents also discussed various aspects of bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Paris and Yerevan, as well as EU-Armenia cooperation.

"Sarkozy confirmed his country's intention to develop relations with Armenia in all directions, and emphasized that France was and remains a friend of Armenia, being constantly by her side,” sources close to the Armenian leader said.

The two leaders’ meeting was their second since Sargsyan took his office in April 2008. His first working visit to Paris took place in November 2008.
