Heads of CSTO member states agree to establish effective system of crisis response


At an informal meeting in Astana on 12 August, the presidents of the
member-states of the Collective Security Treaty discussed the
implementation of development initiatives and organizations, put on
the agenda by the CSTO's current president, Belarus, at the December
session of the Collective Security Council, the press service of the
Belarusian head of state reports.

Priorities proposed by the Belarusian side are, among others: creation
of an effective system for responding to crisis situations; study of
the issues related to the prospects of organizing peacekeeping
activities together with the UN, establishment of the CSTO
partnership, transition to the practical use of the CSTO peacekeeping
forces, development and approval of the target program of equipping
the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces with modern weaponry, as well as
military and special equipment.

On August 12 Astana hosted an informal summit of the Collective
Security Treaty Organization members. The meeting involved six of the
seven presidents of the CSTO member states: Dmitry Medvedev (Russia),
Nursultan Nazarbayev (Kazakhstan) Alexander Lukashenko (Belarus),
Serge Sargsyan (Armenia), Emomali Rahmon (Tajikistan) and Roza
Otunbayeva (Kyrgyzstan).
