New peace talks on Cyprus

Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias and Prime Minister of the Northern Cyprus Dervis Eroglu have opened new negotiations today, RIA Novosti reports.


The island has been split since 1974. The northern part of the island has only been recognized by Ankara.
The sides are negotiating reunion of the island if they manage to come to an agreement.


A blast happened causing a major power cut on July 11. Lack of electricity may cause economic problems.


UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon invited both Cyprus leaders to meet in October 2011 and discuss progress in peaceful talks. Politis paper says that the informal summit will last several days and is aimed at major progress in the problem.
